oh, glee.

britney the perfect is brilliant once again:

blaine - “this is for anyone that’s ever been cheated on.”
kurt - “this is insane.  i didn’t cheat on you.”
britney - “cheetahs have the fastest land speed of any living animal.”

hahahaha.  i love you, britney.

fascinating.

[warning: i get into a somewhat technical description of how i made this fascinator.  if you don’t give a fuck, just keep scrolling for pictures.]

this fascinator is what $13 and an evening’s work can get you.

well, $13, an evening of work, free pearls and beads and help from kari love, access to a industrial pearl-edge machine, 4 years of professional experience in costume construction, and 3 years of training.

so really it’s what $13 and an evening can get me.  or in this case, what it gets my best gat0rz.  the lovely lady you see in this photograph has been my partner in hijinks for over 10 years now.  when she told me she was getting married, i obviously wanted to make the dress, but we live on opposite coasts.  so i offered to make her a fascinator instead.  then it turns out, she wore a dress i made for her 3 years ago to attend a big occasion in d.c.  so technically, i did make her wedding dress.

the fascinator base i purchased for $5.  it is uncovered buckram with wire edge covered in bias binding.  i covered the gross generic binding with pretty jade green silk bias made from scraps left from hillary’s dress.  the beaded piece on the front was $3.  the black net was $5 for a yard, but i didn’t use the whole yard.  everything i purchased was from B & Q Trim in new york.

for the flowers, i made circular ruffles from remants of the grey silk from the dress.  i ended up french-seaming them together, but if i had it to do over again, i would just sew the ruffles together with a tiny zig-zag.  i made 10 circles of a 4 1/2” diameter with a 1 1/2” center circle.   i ended up make 3 flowers, 2 flowers of 3 circles and 1 flower with 4.  i hand gathered them, which took a bit more time.  i made that choice partly so i could do it while watching a movie and partly because i wasn’t sure how big i was going to make the flowers and i could avoid the weird bits at the ends when your machine gather stitch falls out because you cut through it.

the 2 smaller flowers have 3 pearls and 3 green beads alternating to make the flower center; the larger one has 5 pearls and 5 green beads.  to do this, i knotted my thread, came up through the center of the flower, strung the beads and then put the needle back through the first bead to make a loop.  then i stitched each bead down individually to hold the circle down in the center of the flower.  i used this step to make sure the gathered raw edges of the silk flower were covered by the pearl centers.

to arrange the pieces on the fascinator, i pinned them to the base with long pins, moving them around until i liked how the flowers and beaded piece looked in relation to each other.  then i pinned on the net.  i did this kind of blindly because i don’t have a head form at home.  so i sort of gathered it up and pinned it, and then held the fascinator to my head in the mirror and made adjustments.  this part came out the least nicely, in my opinion.  but!  lucky for me, it was easy to arrange the net on hillary.  a few bobby pins later, it was tucked and gathered into something quite attractive.  i sewed the net down first and hid the ends under the flowers.  to attach the flowers, i used black thread and sewed through and through the under-layers of the flowers and the base.  for the beaded piece, i did a running stitch around the piece, stitching through and through the beaded piece and the base, hiding my stitches between the beads.  the base of the fascinator is black buckram.  so the stitching is next to invisible inside and also, who is going to look inside a fascinator and criticize my stitching?   the goal when attaching everything was to sew it on strongly, but as invisibly as possible (on the outside.)

i had intended to put elastic loops on the inside of the fascinator, so it could be attached with bobby pins.  but i forgot my sewing kit at work with the elastic bits i had pilfered from the scrap bin.  what i did instead was to make crochet loops, similar to when you make a swing tack or a lingerie loop.  it did the job, but the elastic would have done it better.

(bridejira attacks san franciso!)

the dress is mostly copied from a vintage 1930s pattern belonging to linda pisano, who kindly let me copy the pattern.   i made the original dress for the summer production of lend me a tenor at brown county playhouse in 2007, for which linda was the costume designer.  for my gat0rz, i replaced the tie-neck blouson bodice with a boatneck princess bodice that drops low in the back.  the sleeves, the hip-inset panels and that lovely ruched piece in the back were all details of the vintage pattern.  it is made of charcoal grey silk with jade green silk satin details, it is fully lined in silk charmeuse.

i corrected my first spider-man muscles today!  going forward, i am going to learn how to fit and correct spider-man’s muscle suit and unitard so that my draper can focus more on new projects.  and so i can learn new things.

i am excited.  and nervous.  but it’s a pretty safe adventure.  i mean, kari will be teaching me and will be around to help me if i fuck things up.  i like when the stakes are low.  high-stakes adventures make me very uncomfortable.

so yeah.  spider-man is going to transition into being mostly my responsibility.

in other news, now that i’ve been shamed into keeping my apartment relatively clean, i feel like i should start working on personal projects more.  since i actually have space to set up my sewing table and what-not.  now that i’m not just hiding in my clutter when i’m at home, i am feeling lazy for not doing more creative projects.    or any, if we’re being specific.  it’s been over a year since i made anything from my own brain.  i should at least start sketching again.

i’m currently working my way through the entire back catalog of the bowery boys podcasts

my two favourite things i’ve learned recently are:

-at the algonquin round table, they played a word game in which you were given a word and had to immediately come up with a sentence which used the word, preferably a clever sentence.  for example, when presented with the word “horticulture,” dorothy parker gave the sentence, “you can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.”  [say it out loud, if the joke is not immediately giggle-inducing.]

-in the ziegfeld follies, in the early 20th century, a frequent act was a tableau vivant—basically people posed on-stage presenting a scene from art, mythology, literature, whatever.  not terribly exciting, yeah?  except it was full of naked ladies.  which was totally legal at the time as long as they didn’t move.  hahaha.  that is right.  it was legal to be naked on the stage as long as you were standing totally still.  because obviously, naked ladies in motion are completely obscene.  obviously.

check out the bowery boys, if you are not a listener already.  it is a charming and fun podcast.  and unlike many podcasts, you can listen to 86 [and counting] in a row without getting bored of these guys.
