such a great show tonight, you guys! my first show of 2011. we’re not counting that cover band in carmel on NYE.
but we are counting yellow ostrich at the mercury lounge!
the only opening band i saw was echo kings. they were alright, i guess. they could all deal with tighter pants. they were very enthusiastic though. and the crowd seemed into it. so that’s good. and to be entirely fair, i only caught the last three songs of their set. one of which was a cover of “another brick in the wall” by pink floyd. [??]
here are some pictures:

yellow ostrich is one of the best bands i heard last year. you should all be listening to them. you can stream and/or buy their latest album the mistress over on bandcamp: http://yellowostrich.bandcamp.com/ you might remember my enthusiastic comments about their CMJ set at the glasslands way back in october. that set was a little plagued with technical difficulties. but i will overlook pretty much anything if i like you. it’s one of my best [and maybe worst] qualities. and i could definitely tell that the music was good enough to endure a rough set.
tonight we got the technical difficulties out of the way during the first song. lead singer alex schaaf’s laptop went to sleep and killed all vocals and whatever that had been looping. oops. no worries though. some fiddling with the cords and a password entry later, and they were back in business.
it all went pretty smoothly from then on. it was a great set. there was a nice sized crowd. on a tuesday, no less.

such a great way to start out 2011. and i was so good and fulfilled my resolution of fucking wearing earplugs at concerts. because as hilarious as it can be that my dad is super deaf, i don’t really want to end up that way myself. i thought that was a good new year’s resolution. and totally do-able. plus, i found a pack of the cutest green earplugs at the drugstore. who says being sensible can’t also be adorable?
